Yesterday was International Women’s Day, which spurred a lengthy conversation with my daughter about notable women throughout history. A part of me wishes I’d caught her animated initial reactions to the stories on tape (they were pretty adorable), but what followed was even better. Pumped about everything she’d learned, she asked me if I would help her make a video “for all the strong women out there.”
Color me excited!
The first step was finding the perfect outfit (“Important people wear ties, Mom!”), but once that hurdle had been cleared, she busied herself with planning and filming her perspective on what it meant to be a strong woman, with a special message to all the ladies out there at the end. She’s six, so obviously there’s a different depth of understanding in play, and in retrospect, I wish I had encouraged her to include Laverne Cox, Lili Elbe, and other significant transwomen from history in her breakdown of strong womenfolk, but it’s not a bad start for my budding feminist.
I cannot begin to describe how proud I am of her. Heart. Bursting.
So without further ado, from the mouths of babes: the importance of being a strong woman. Happy belated International Women’s Day, everyone!
